Manual

Take the right precautions (gloves etc.)!

Preparing the paint surface

With this product, Fiebing's advises Fiebing's Deglazer or Dye Prep as a product for cleaning/preparing the leather surface.

Deglazer removes old shine and finish layers.

Dye prep cleans the leather (it's like a soapy water)

Application of the paint

While the leather is still damp from cleaning (see preparation). You can apply the dye evenly with a dauber. For larger surfaces, Fiebing's sponges can be useful. We recommend to apply it in circular motions. Stripes will continue to be seen. A second layer may be applied if necessary. With each layer you apply to the surface, the color darkens.

Applying this paint does require some practice. We strongly recommend test pieces.

Diluting the paint can be done with Fiebing's Dye reducer. Sometimes it also works by slightly diluting it with water (first try on a test piece).

After-treatment of the paint surface

After painting, remove the paint that remains on the surface with a soft cloth. Rub the leather firmly. For a high gloss, you can use the product Fiebing's Resolene as a finish layer. There are several finishes possible see each product for details.

Tip: Use about the black leather dye, black resolene. This makes the color even deeper! (and makes the surface water repellent)

Mixing Dye with Neatsfoot Oil

Mixing Fiebing’s Leather Dye and Prime Neatsfoot Oil Compound. For generations saddle makers and other manufacturers of leather goods have used a combination of oil and dye to both control color as well as to maintain the suppleness of the leather.

To achieve this highly desired result the trick is to mix 6% of Fiebing’s Leather Dye with 94% Fiebing’s Prime Neatsfoot Oil Compound.  This works especially well with all of the brown tones and the primary colors like green and blue.

Apply as usual to unfinished, vegetable tanned leather and allow to dry.  You can try to buff the surface when dry to remove any excess dye but due to the low concentration of dye in this mixture you should not have much of a rub off issue.  Once dry, feel free to seal with Fiebing’s Acrylic Resolene.

The R&D testing at Fiebing's has proven that Fiebing’s Leather Dye combines more effectively with Fiebing’s Prime Neatsfoot Oil Compound then does Fiebing’s Professional Oil Dye.  We suggest you use the standard Fiebing’s Leather Dye when attempting this dye/oil combination.

Own Risk

  • The use of adhesives, solvents and paints is at your own risk. This applies to both your health and the way you use these products.
  • Make sure that you ventilate the space sufficiently and use protection for your skin (gloves), eyes (glasses, if splashed) and protection of nose and mouth in case you use spraypaint.

Colours

  • Colors may differ from the original.
    This may be due to:
    • different supplies
    • paint baths (except for natural veg. tanned leather)
    • display settings of your device (computer, phone or tablet).
  • When you use penatrating dye the color of the leather (base) has an effect on the results. When you use a darker leather as a base, the final color will also be darker.
